Overview

The Fernox TF1 Compact is the slimline version of Fernox's market-leading magnetic filter range. It combines hydrocyclonic action with powerful neodymium magnets to capture both magnetic sludge (iron oxide) and non-magnetic debris from system water, protecting boilers, pumps and valves from damage and improving heating efficiency.

In-Depth Look

The Fernox TF1 Compact sits alongside the F1 Protector as one of Fernox’s core central heating protection products. While the F1 is a chemical inhibitor, the TF1 Compact is a physical filter — and the two work best in combination, providing both chemical and mechanical protection against system contamination.

How It Works

The TF1 Compact uses two filtration methods simultaneously. Hydrocyclonic action spins the system water at high velocity, using centrifugal force to separate heavier non-magnetic debris particles — rust flakes, scale fragments, and installation grit — out of the flow and into the collection chamber. Simultaneously, powerful neodymium magnets capture magnetite (iron oxide sludge), the fine black magnetic particles that form when steel radiators corrode internally. Magnetite is the primary cause of boiler heat exchanger fouling, pump seizure, and valve failure in UK central heating systems.

Compact Advantage

The slim body is designed to sit flush against a wall, making it suitable for tight installations — under a wall-hung boiler where access is limited, inside a kitchen cupboard, or in a narrow utility room. The 22mm valve connections are included in the kit, allowing direct pipework connection without additional fittings. Horizontal or vertical installation orientation is both supported.

Servicing

The TF1 Compact can be cleaned without draining the heating system. The isolation valves included in the kit allow the filter body to be isolated, the magnet assembly removed, cleaned under running water to remove the magnetite accumulation, and refitted — typically a 5-10 minute task. Annual servicing at the boiler service interval is recommended.

Gas Safe and Building Regulations

Gas Safe registered engineers fitting magnetic filters as part of a new boiler installation or service are following current best practice guidance from HHIC and BESA. Central heating system filters are also referenced in British Standard BS 7593, which covers the treatment of water in domestic hot water central heating systems.

Verdict

The Fernox TF1 Compact is an essential component of any well-protected central heating system. Paired with Fernox F1 inhibitor, it provides comprehensive physical and chemical protection against the sludge, corrosion, and scale that cause heating system failures.
